Part film score, part bluegrass epic, with a healthy dose of rock, soul and classical leanings, the debut album from the River Empires is an experimental delight that’s cinematic in scope and sound. The last (first?) in a backward six-part series to accompany a future film or TV project, “Epilogue” manages to be ambitious without venturing into pretention. Plus, the music is just really, really good; songs run the range from moving minimalist instrumentals to robust toe-tappers like “Three Tigers,” perhaps the catchiest, most soul-stirring piece of music you’ll hear this year.—METROMIX DC
